HATTIESBURG, Miss. (March 8, 2017) – North Carolina A&T softball defeated Southern Mississippi 1-0 at USM Softball Complex on Wednesday night, led by sophomore Zadashia Waddell in the circle.

The win over the Eagles broke N.C. A&T put the Aggies in the winner's circle for the first time in 10 games as they were 0-9-1 in their last 10 games going into the game. Waddell threw a complete game allowing only three hits and senior Kimberly Brunson was the star from the plate, scoring the Aggies only run of the game on a home run down the left field line in the second inning.  Stephanie Williams, Jillian Nobles and Zadia Davis also had hits.

After Brunson’s home run in the second, Davis put in her one hit in the third on a single to the pitcher and Williams singled to center field in the sixth before Nobles advanced her to second on a single to right field. However, the Aggies were unable to capitalize, but a strong defensive performance kept Southern Miss off the board.

The Eagles hit a double in the first and a single in the second, but their offense didn’t find themselves on base much until they loaded them in the fourth on an error by the Aggies at shortstop and a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs.

A fly out to left field ended the inning, however.  Southern Miss left two runners stranded in the fifth and one in the sixth before finding themselves with a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base.

Rachel Johnson reached base on a walk but found herself out on a double play from Lauren Dunlow at second base to Williams to Brunson at first.  Waddell walked the next two batters before Mohagony Headen came in for the final out to capture the save.

The Aggies have a quick turnaround before facing Jackson State in a Thursday doubleheader in Jackson, Miss.  Games are scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m.
