GREENSBORO (October 6, 2017) – North Carolina A&T cruised to their fourth consecutive victory with sweep of Savannah State (25-22, 14, 17) in Moore Gymnasium Friday night. Freshman Edie Brewer posted a season-high hitting percentage of .643 on nine kills, zero attack errors and 14 attempts. Brewer also totaled 16 assists and two blocks.

N.C. A&T senior Samara Brown also had nine kills for an Aggie attack that finished with 35 kills. Savannah State struggled throughout the night, committing 26 errors.

The Aggies (10-9, 2-0 MEAC) collected seven team blocks led by the duo of sophomore Camille Uadiale and senior Jasmine Lindor. Uadaile had four total blocks and Lindor chipped in with three blocks and six kills. Freshman Courteney Pitt recorded two service aces and had five kills along with senior Alyssa Pitt who also slammed down five kills. Freshman Milanna Morgan tallied a team-high seven digs and sophomore Christa Wilson had six digs.

“It was a solid win tonight against a good opponent,” said N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton. “It was a battle in the first set, but it stayed close and I am really proud of how our team focused and kept their composure. Those are the things that we have been working on all year. Today that propelled us into really solid second and third sets after winning the first.”

Brewer had five kills in the opening set win. N.C. A&T trailed 9-7 before the Aggies scored the next five points thanks in part to two kills by Brewer and one from Courteney Pitt. The Tigers battled back to tie the set at 14, 16, 17, 18 and 20 before the Aggies finally took command of the set. It started with a kill from Brown followed by two SSU mistakes to give the Aggies a 23-20 lead. An Edie Brewer kill kept the Aggies ahead by three, 24-21. SSU’s Oneilla Fuller scored, but a Lindor kill gave the Aggies the set and 1-0 advantage in the match.

In the second set the Aggies forced the Tigers into 10 errors and led the entire way. Kills from Brown and Alyssa Pitt along with an attack error gave N.C. A&T a 3-0 lead.  A service ace by Morgan and an attack by Brewer gave the Aggies a 10-4 advantage. Soon the SSU’s deficit increased to double-digits at 16-6 after consecutive kills by Lindor and Courteney Pitt. The Tigers had only six kills while the Aggies had 10 in the set behind Lindor’s team-high three. The final four out of five points in the set came on errors by SSU.

Savannah State held a 3-0 advantage in the third set before the Aggies came storming back. Alyssa Pitt got things going, followed by Brown and then an attack error by the Tigers to tie the set at 3. The duo of Pitt and Brown combined for the next five kills springing the Aggies to a 10-5 lead. Miscues doomed the Tigers (2-16, 0-3 MEAC) throughout the set as they totaled eight attack errors that the Aggies smartly turned into points. Lindor notched the 20th point of the set for A&T on a kill and then Brewer recorded the final successful attack to give the Aggies a 23-17 lead.

The Tigers night ended with a pair of attack errors to give the Aggies the set and match.  Brown shined in the third set with four kills and Alyssa Pitt added three.

“Jasmine Lindor is continuing to work hard at the net and we keep finding ways to get her the ball to score. We must make sure that our passers are aggressive, and we stay in system to feed Jasmine. Our serve-receive went well tonight. Our passers really stepped up allowing us to hit .271 which is a good night for us. We have to continue working on being efficient and good things will happen.”

Savannah State was led by Fuller’s nine kills and Leire Melendez’s 12 digs. N.C. A&T returns to action on Sunday, October 8 at 2 p.m., against South Carolina State at Moore Gymnasium.
