SAVANNAH, Ga. (November 3, 2017) – North Carolina A&T volleyball completed the season sweep of Savannah State with a 3-0 win (25-14, 14, 20) on Friday at Tiger Arena.

“I thought we played a solid match today,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We faced some adversity on our travel and only had 40 minutes to get ready for the Tigers. I loved the way our team faced adversity by keeping their minds right and playing a nice match.”

Freshman Edie Brewer led the Aggies with her fifth double-double of the season (17 assists, 14 digs) and notched a season-high five service aces. Junior Megan Wiggins recorded a season-best four service aces and garnered double-figure assists with 10. Senior Samara Brown and freshman Courteney Pitt led the attack as Brown finished with 13 kills, five digs and five blocks while Pitt had 10 kills and hit a team-best .471. As a team, N.C. A&T posted a .276 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Christa Wilson aided the defense with 10 digs and senior Jasmine Lindor collected six blocks as the Aggies totaled eight.

The first set was a breeze for the Aggies who held the Tigers to .100 hitting percentage. The duo of Brown and Courteney Pitt combined for 11 kills in the set. Trailing Savannah State 5-3, Brown’s first kill of the set followed by Wiggins’ service ace ignited the Aggies. Brown came up with two consecutive kills and Wiggins nailed another ace forcing the Tigers into a timeout down, 8-5. Savannah State fought back with a successful 4-0 run. But the Aggies took control of the set midway through. After a Tyran Chenault kill brought SSU to within one at 12-11, Courteney Pitt, Alyssa Pitt and Brown pushed produced kills during a 5-0 run for the Aggies resulting in a 17-11 advantage. N.C. A&T closed the set on an 8-3 run to cruise to the Set 1 win.

In the second set, Brown once again led the attack with three kills on six attempts while both Brewer and Courteney Pitt each had two kills. The Tigers struggled with eight kills and eight errors and trialed for majority of the set. Three early errors by the Tigers and a kill by Alyssa Pitt gave the Aggies a 4-2 advantage. Consecutive kills by Brown and Lindor allowed N.C. A&T to break out to a 10-6 lead. Three Savannah State errors and kills by Brown and Brewer all but put the set away as the Aggies took a 20-10 lead. Three errors by the Tigers followed by kills from Brewer and Courtney Pitt were the final points the Aggies needed to take the two-set lead.

Facing a straight-set sweep, Savannah State battled and kept things tight throughout the first 10 points of the third. The Tigers finally broke away and went on a 7-1 run taking a 13-9 advantage on four errors by the Aggies. Courteney Pitt ended the Tigers run with her second kill followed by Lindor’s service ace and an attack error by SSU which cut the deficit to 13-12.  After three straight points by the Tigers, the Aggies finally responded by going on an 8-1 run to go ahead 20-17. Brewer shined with three service aces and a kill over that span. N.C. A&T took over behind kills by sophomore Camille Uadile, Lindor and Brown. Brown recorded her 13th kill of the match giving the Aggies a 24-20 lead and the final point came on an error by the Tigers.

Savannah State was led by Amanda Rullan Vilanova’s six kills and Chenault’s five. The Aggies are back in action on Saturday, November 4 at 6 p.m., versus South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C.
