GREENSBORO (May 14, 2018) – Two North Carolina A&T baseball players received Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekly accolades on Monday. The MEAC named Dawnoven Smith (6-foot-1, 215, JR, OF, Jacksonville, N.C.) player of the week. They named Josh Bottenfield (6-2, 170, R-SR, RHP, Concord, N.C.) co-pitcher of the week Week honors.

The Aggies had a great week where they took three out of four from the Florida A&M Rattlers to win the MEAC Southern Division crown by posting a 16-8. The 16 conference wins breaks the previous school record for conference wins, 15, set in 2010 and 2017.


N.C. A&T also won their first MEAC regular-season title in 13 years. The last time the Aggies had a No. 1 seed going into the MEAC tournament, they won the title in 2005. 

Smith was key in the Aggies taking three of four from FAMU. He hit .438 (7-for-16) for the week, driving in 12 runs and scoring eight times while also boasting a robust 1.125 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage. Smith hit three home runs – two in Monday’s makeup game at War Memorial Stadium – two doubles and he hit safely in all four games throughout the week.

This season, Smith has played 44 games and leads the team in hitting (.327), home runs (8), RBI (41), runs scored (42) and slugging percentage (.596). Smith now has two player of the week honors this season to go along with Milton Rivera’s.

Bottenfield had four relief appearances during the week and picked up two victories in the process. He tossed six shutout innings, gave up just four hits and struck out three. His wins came in back-to-back victories on Saturday and Sunday that clinched the division for N.C. A&T as he improved to 5-3 with a 1.85 ERA on the season.

He leads the team with 36 appearances and ranks second in wins and saves (3). This is the third pitching weekly honor for N.C. A&T and Bottenfield’s first. his season and is Bottenfield’s first. Senior Josh Stikeleather has two weekly pitching honors in 2018.

The 2018 MEAC Baseball Championship Tournament begins noon Thursday for N.C. A&T as they will play the Bethune-Cookman/Norfolk State winner at Sliwa Stadium on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
