A&T Relay Teams, Jumper, Sprinters Head to Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. – North Carolina A&T track and field will send nine student-athletes to the University of Oregon to compete at the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field. The meet starts Wednesday, June 6, and the full slate of qualifying heats and finals will continue through Saturday.
The NCAA championships consist of four days of action with the semifinals of the men’s events being held on Wednesday, while the men’s finals will be held on Friday. Each of N.C. A&T’s races will see three heats in the semifinals, with the top two from each heat plus the next two fastest times advancing to the championship rounds.
The Aggies competing at the NCAA championships are coming off strong performances at the East Preliminary Round at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
Rodney Rowe, 200-meter dash
Junior Rodney Rowe makes his second appearance at the NCAA outdoor championships after qualifying with the top overall 200-meter time at East prelims in Tampa Bay. Rowe ran a personal-best 20.26 on the final day of the regional for a spot in the championships, where he will run in the third heat at 9:44 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday. He will also run as part of the 4x100-meter relay team.
Rowe will make his third consecutive appearance at an NCAA championship event after qualifying for -last year’s outdoor championships and this season’s indoor championships. Rowe earned first-team All-American honors as part of last season’s historic 4x100 team that has the ninth-fastest time (38.48) in NCAA history. He was a second-team All-American in the 200m NCAA indoor championships in February.
Trevor Stewart, 400-meter dash
Freshman Trevor Stewart was the first Aggie to book a ticket to the NCAA championships running the ninth-fastest time of the East prelims (45.62) in the 400m. Stewart opened the regionals with a personal-record 45.28 in the first round advancing with the third-fastest time to reach the quarterfinals. He will compete in the second 400m heat at 9 p.m., EST Wednesday. Stewart will also run as part of the 4x400 team for the Aggies.
Stewart has put together a breakout season. He earned a silver medal in the 400m at the 2018 MEAC outdoor championships ranking 19th in the nation at 45.63. During the MEAC indoor championships, he was part of the gold-winning 4x400 team.
