EAST GREENSBORO (February 20, 2019) - North Carolina A&T’s Vasil Ivanov (6-foot-3, FR, Kardzhali, Bulgaria) captured his second singles win and first doubles win of the 2019 season and was rewarded for his effort by being named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s tennis rookie of the week (Feb. 11-Feb. 17).
“Vasil is amazing to watch with most if not all of his matches have been very entertaining because he is playing the game on such a high level, and he continues to improve with each match,” said N.C. A&T coach William Crutchfield.
Freshman Vasil Ivanov won his second singles match of the season at No. 2 singles. He started off strong taking the first set 6-3. His opponent fought back by taking the second set 6-4. The third set was decided by a tiebreaker set after the two were tied at 6 apiece. Ivanov sealed the match with a 7-5 win.
“We are glad to have him, and he has been a welcome addition to the team,” said Crutchfield. “He works hard and he trains hard and he is equally strong in the classroom as well.”
Ivanov also teamed up with senior Nicolas Arduh to grab a doubles win as well. The pair defeated Davidson’s Axel Fries and Yash Parikh 6-4 at the No. 1 doubles position.
