EAST GREENSBORO – Four-year starter Mohagony Headen celebrated Senior Day at Lady Aggies Softball Complex with a home run. Despite Headen’s memorable homer on her special day, the Florida A&M Rattlers still came away with a doubleheader Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) sweep on Sunday, 10-2 in Game 1 and 13-2 in the second game.

The Aggies celebrated five seniors before Sunday’s doubleheader including Headen, Zadaisha Waddell, Zadia Davis, Morgan Chisholm and Taylor Martin.

It was a sophomore who aided Headen offensively in Game 1 as Samantha Ramirez went 1-for-2 with a one run scored and an RBI. Waddell (4-5) picked up the loss in the circle pitching the first 5.1 innings giving up two earned runs.

After the Senior Day ceremony ended, Game 1 got off to a slow start. Neither team scored until the fifth inning when FAMU scored five runs. FAMU had an opportunity to score first in the second inning after they got a runner into scoring position, but Davis made a great play on a Kimiya Watkins flyball to keep the Rattlers off the board.

The Rattlers (17-23, 8-0 MEAC) had another opportunity in the fourth inning with runners on second and third with one out, but a groundball to shortstop Alyssa Smith got Jamesia Stoudemire caught in a rundown between third and home. Freshman Desttany Parker eventually tagged her out to keep the game scoreless.

FAMU did score in the fifth, however. Tyra Bowers hit an RBI double followed by another RBI double by Stoudemire. Two errors on one play allowed three Rattler runners to score for a 5-0 error on the play allowed the batter to score for a 5-0 lead.

But the Aggies fought back in their half of the fifth. Ramirez singled which set up Headen’s two-run homer, a line drive over the center field wall. It was her 12th career home run as she cut the Rattlers lead to 5-2.

But the Rattlers took a big lead with a five-run sixth. The Aggies (8-21, 5-3 MEAC) forced home two straight runs with bases-loaded walks. Taylor Rosier hit an RBI sacrifice fly for an 8-2 lead and another run was forced with another bases-loaded walk to give FAMU a seven-run lead. Watkins drove home the final run on a ground out.

In the circle, Kyaira Brown (11-8) went the distance giving up two runs on two hits to get the win.

In the second game, freshman Eternal Fuller led the team with two hits and Ramirez recorded the only RBI. Davis and freshman Nikki Varela each scored a run. In the circle, Headen (1-12) got the loss after pitching 2.1 innings giving up three earned runs.

FAMU started off with two runs in the first inning after a Stoudemire RBI double and an Alexis Day RBI sac fly for a 2-0 lead. They extended their lead to 5-0 after scoring three runs in the second on a Stoudemire three-run homer to left field.

The Rattlers scored three more runs in the third inning after an RBI single by Brokenboroug and a two-run single by Bowers for an 8-0 lead. The Aggies got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the inning after Ramirez singled home Varela to cut the lead to 8-1.

N.C. A&T scored again in the fourth inning as Davis scored on a wild pitch after reaching on an infield single to make it a 9-2 game.

The Rattlers scored their final four runs in the fifth inning. N.C. A&T went down in order in the fifth inning to end the game early based on the run rule. Stoudemire led the Rattlers with three hits.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series 11 a.m., Monday at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
