CARY – North Carolina A&T lost their 2019 regular-season finale on Sunday as N.C. Central defeated the Aggies 8-5 at Thomas Brooks Park.

The Aggies (8-27, 5-10 MEAC) will head into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament, May 8-11 in Ormond Beach, Fla., as the No. 4 seed out of the MEAC Southern Division.

N.C. A&T had a big inning in the fourth on Sunday, but that was thwarted by a big inning from the Eagles (20-24, 10-5 MEAC) in their half of the fifth.

Freshman Nikki Varela led the Aggies by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Aggies trailed 2-0 after the Eagles got an RBI single from Aleyah Evans and Kaitlyn Macon stole home.

But the Aggies opened their big fourth inning with a single up the middle by Varela. Senior Zadaisha Waddell scored Varela on an RBI single to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Senior Taylor Martin replaced Waddell on the basepaths and moved to second when sophomore Marcey Jiles was hit by a pitch.

Sophomore Hailee Cutts capitalized with a two-run RBI double down the left-field line to give the Aggies the lead at 3-2. After a pop out to shortstop, Cutts went to third on a double from freshman Eternal Fuller. Senior Mohagony Headen drove both runs home with a two-run RBI single to right-center.

She was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a double. But the Aggies came away from the inning with a 5-2 advantage.

An RBI double by NCCU’s Jessica Powell cut the Aggies lead to 5-3 in the Eagles fourth. The lead was cut to one run on an RBI single by Jacobia Johnson. Duen led the Eagles by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Waddell (4-8) took the loss in the circle while Kiara Hurley (15-13) got the win. The Aggies will be looking to win their first-ever MEAC title when they travel to Florida next week.
