EAST GREENSBORO – For the third consecutive week, North Carolina A&T junior Edie Brewer (6-foot, setter/right side, West Chester, Ohio) was named co-player of the week by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as announced by the conference on Monday.
“Congrats to Edie for another excellent all-around performance,” said N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton. “Adding her sixth triple-double on Friday and then following that up with her effort Sunday shows you the kind of player that she is.
Brewer earned her fifth weekly award this season. It was her fourth player of the week award. She has seven career weekly awards. She averaged 4.88 assists, 2.50 kills, 2.12 digs and 0.25 blocks in two wins last week. Brewer also had a .277 hitting percentage.
In the Aggies 3-2 win in Moore Gymnasium against Maryland Eastern Shore Friday night, Brewer recorded her sixth triple-double of the season with 12 kills, a team-high 26 assists and 13 digs while hitting .290. The six triple-doubles are the second-most in the NCAA trailing Southern Illinois’ Rachel Mcguire by three.
N.C. A&T moved to 8-0 in the MEAC with their 3-0 sweep of Delaware State Sunday at Moore Gymnasium on Sunday. Brewer led the team with eight kills and added 13 assists and four digs.
“She works really hard and she continues to push herself to learn the game from so many perspectives,” said Clifton. “One of the things that make her special is that she is really humble and really looks to make her teammates better. She gets frustrated if she sets a bad ball or doesn’t make a play.”
Brewer leads the team in hitting percentage (.284) and assists per set (5.78). She is fourth in the MEAC in hitting percentage, seventh in assists per set and she seventh in kills per set (2.87). In conference opponents only, Brewer is hitting .323 and averaging 5.78 assists, 2.94 kills and 0.84 blocks.
The last time a MEAC student-athlete received three consecutive player of the week awards was in 2014 when Vendula Strakova of Hampton won three in a row from Oct. 20-Nov. 3.
N.C. A&T has received 10 weekly awards this season with Brewer leading the way with five. Sophomore libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera and sophomore middle hitter Shaylynn Hall have two apiece. Freshman setter Addy Warfield has one.
The 10 weekly awards are tied for the most in the MEAC this season along with Morgan State.
The Aggies (10-12, 8-0 MEAC) face the last two MEAC northern division teams this weekend with a trip to Norfolk, Va., to face Norfolk State (1-15, 1-6 MEAC) Friday at 6 p.m. They then travel to the nation’s capital to face three-time defending MEAC champion Howard (10-11, 7-0 MEAC) Sunday at 1 p.m.
