NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina A&T volleyball junior setter/right side Edie Brewer recorded another double-double with a team-high 14 assists and a match-high 13 digs as the Aggies remained unbeaten in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with a 3-0 (25-22, 17, 22) sweep of Norfolk State at Gill Gymnasium.

It was the Aggies (11-12, 9-0 MEAC) consecutive win. Brewer added six kills, two service aces and two blocks, while sophomore right side hitter Fatimah Shabazz recorded a match-high 10 kills and junior outside hitter Courteney Pitt added eight kills and two service aces.

Sophomore libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera finished with 10 digs, freshman setter Addy Warfield posted 10 assists and eight digs and senior outside hitter Christa Wilson ended the night with 10 digs, four kills and two blocks.

Norfolk State (1-17, 1-7 MEAC) led 10-8 in the first set, but the Aggies scored the next four points to take a two-point lead, 12-10, after kills from Wilson, Hall and Shabazz. Brewer added a service ace during the run.

The Spartans regained the lead at 16-14 before the Aggies broke away with a 7-1 run aided by kills from freshman Mallory Porcher and Pitt to go along with a Pitt service ace. NSU refused to go away as an Aggies attack error got the Spartans to within one at 22-21.  But the Aggies got a block assist from Wilson and Hall to take a 23-21 lead. NSU scored again before the Aggies closed things out with a kill apiece from Shabazz and Pitt for the one-set lead.

N.C. A&T got out to a big lead in the second set at 16-9. To force a Spartans timeout. The Aggies still maintained control of the set after the time out as an NSU service error and attack error put the Aggies on the brink of a two-set lead at 24-16. NSU stayed alive thanks to an Aggies attack error but an attack error of their own gave the Aggies the set.

In the final set, the Aggies scored the first three points on a Brewer service ace and two Wilson kills. But the Spartans eventually took the lead at 9-6 before a 6-0 run sparked by a block assist from Wilson and Porcher put the Aggies in front, 12-9.

The Spartans found themselves back in the lead by a point, 18-17, when Pitt committed an attack error. The Aggies recovered by scoring the next seven points to take a 24-18 lead. Brewer had two kills during the run and Warfield added a service ace.

NSU answered with a 4-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 24-22 before Brewer ended the match and completed the sweep with a kill.

Norfolk State was led Quiana Griffin with seven kills.

In a battle of the two remaining undefeated teams in the MEAC, the Aggies will face Howard 1 p.m., Sunday at Burr Gymnasium. The Bison are the defending three-time MEAC champions and they are 11-11 overall and 8-0 in the MEAC.

A win by N.C. A&T on Sunday would give them the outright MEAC Southern Division title.
