WILMINGTON, N.C. – North Carolina A&T lost twice on Saturday at the Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic Tournament hosted by the UNC Wilmington Seahawks at Boseman Field to droop to 0-4 for the classic.
In their first game of the day, the Aggies were defeated by UMBC 9-1 as the Aggies were hurt by six errors. Later in the day, the Aggies lost to Lehigh 10-0 as they were limited to two hits against the Mountain Hawks.
The Aggies (0-9) got off to a rough start against the Retrievers in the first game giving up nine runs over the first three innings of the game. Sophomore Hailee Cutts did retire the Retrievers in order in the fourth inning to give the Aggies a highlight in the circle. But a five-run second proved problematic for the Aggies as the Retrievers used three Aggie errors and RBI from Maddie Daigneau, Sierra Pierce and Anna Lonchar helped UMBC produce the big inning.
Headen (0-5) took the loss while Gillian McCarthy (1-2) got the win. Senior Samantha Ramirez was 2-for-2 for the Aggies and Cutts drove in a run.
Against the Mountain Hawks, Cutts (0-3) took the loss in the circle while Emily Sorem (1-0) got the win. After Cutts left the circle in the first inning after giving up four runs, Headen came in and pitched well for the Aggies pitching four straight scoreless innings. But the Mountain Hawks finally got to the senior in the sixth scoring six runs on eight hits.
Mary-Hannah Smith had the big hit in the inning with a two-run RBI to right field. Freshman Alisa Maldonado and sophomore Marcey Jiles had hits in the game for N.C. A&T.
