MJ Blog Discusses Howard Meet
The score is 3-1. Last year our swim team, the North Carolina A&T swimming team, beat the Howard Bison on three different occasions. The first time was the Fall of 2014. They traveled to our pool only to be greeted by the Dawg House as we defeated Howard by a whopping 109-8.
The second time was in January of 2015 when we traveled to Howard to defeat the Bison in their own water 105-98. After defeating the Bison on two occasions, we met them a third time at the Coastal Collegiate Championships. After four days of swimming we managed again to place above both Howard and Virginia Military Institute.
As we prepared to meet the Bison for the first time during the 2015-16 season, we knew it would be a tough meet. Not only had they recruited new swimmers in their weak areas, but they were also beginning to call the meet a “rematch”.
With this knowledge, we worked harder than ever in practice to be sure we would come out on top again. With a fight to the finish and a close score, the Bison managed to end our three-match winning streak over them. On the Aggies side, there were many season bests. Ariel Wallace was on fire winning the 100-fly with a time of 59.31 and the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:02.36.
Both were season bests for the phenomenal sophomore. Aarica Carrington recorded a season-best 1:03.74 in the 100 backstroke. The 200-freestyle relay continued to get faster coming in at 1:42.44, just tenths of a second behind the Howard Bison.
As we prepare for the Bison to visit Aggieland, we now know how to prepare. We can better strategize with relays and individual events to win. We also have the entire winter break to work on our strokes and speed for the next meet.
