AGGIES OVERVIEW: North Carolina A&T returns after putting up 92 points against Hampton in a 92-84 victory at Corbett Sports Center on Saturday. The Aggies have won eight out of their last 10 games and improved to 9-0 at Corbett. The Aggies have won 10 straight at home dating back to last season. The Aggies reached 90 points for the fifth time this season, but for the first time since scoring 115 points against Mid-Atlantic Christian on Nov. 21. N.C. A&T placed all five starters in double figures for the third time this season and for the first time since Jan. 8 at Delaware State. Davaris McGowens led the way with a season-high 21 points and eight rebounds. McGowens leads the Aggies in scoring in MEAC play, averaging 14.3 points per game. N.C. A&T did defeat Delaware State at Memorial Hall on Jan. 8, 76-66, with Denzel Keyes coming off the bench to score 17 on 8-for-10 shooting. Devonte Boykins added 16 on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range.
DELAWARE STATE OVERVIEW: Delaware State is looking for its first conference win of the season after a 72-61 loss to North Carolina Central on Saturday dropped the Hornets to 0-9 in the MEAC. Delaware State’s two wins this season have come against non-Division I teams. Six of Delaware State’s nine losses in the conference have been by double-digits. The Hornets do have two players scoring in double figures in Simon Okolue (11.2 ppg) and Artem Tavakalyn (11.0 ppg). Delaware State head coach Keith Walker has had tremendous success against the Aggies. Delaware State’s 76-66 loss to the Aggies in January marked the first time Walker lost to the Aggies in five tries. Walker’s Hornets have struggled to stop teams from knocking down 3-point shots. Hornet opponents are shooting 40 percent from 3-point range, while the Aggies lead the conference in 3-point percentage defense.
Stepping Up: Graduate Devonte Boykins is starting to heat up from the outside. In his last two games, Boykins 6-for-13 from 3-point range. He scored all 11 of his points in the first half in the Aggies win over Hampton on Saturday.
News & Notes:
- The Aggies come into the game in second place in the MEAC, a half game behind Savannah State who is 8-1. N.C. A&T is looking for their first MEAC regular-season title since the 1991-92 season. During the 1991-92 season, they tied Howard for the regular-season league title with a 12-4 record.
- The Aggies home winning streak stands at 10 games currently. The Aggies have not had a streak of home wins this large since their mid 80’s run. The longest home win streak prior to the Aggies current streak since the mid 80’s was only seven games.
- In conference play, the Aggies have three different sources of production. Three Aggies are averaging in double figures and one is very close. McGowens leads the way, averaging 14.3 points per game in MEAC play. Fifth-year senior Denzel Keyes (11.6) and junior Femi Olujobi (10.3) are also averaging double figures. Junior Aaren Edmead is averaging 9.9 points in MEAC play.
- They will win their 15th game of the season. The last time the Aggies reached 20 wins during the regular season was the 1987-88 season. The last time the A&T won 20 games in a season was the 2012-13 season.
