GREENSBORO - The North Carolina A&T football team earned a 24-3 win over Morgan State on Saturday. The win helped several players earn weekly honors.
Topping the list was senior cornerback Justin Ferrell. Ferrell was named College Sporting News Special Teams Player of the Week for the Football Championship Subdivision after blocking two field goals against the Bears. He was also named MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Mike Mayhew was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career-high 233 yards and a touchdown. Brent Walker was named Offensive Lineman of the Week for his efforts in helping the Aggies compile 376 yards of total offense.
Ferrell's first block came in the first quarter after the Bears had already taken a 3-0 lead. Before halftime, he blocked his second kick of the day, a 43-yarder that kept the Aggies lead at 17-3 going into the locker room. Ferrell's day also included an interception, three pass breakups and five tackles. His interception deep in Bears territory led to the Aggies final score of the day.
Ferrell is one of the most versatile players in the MEAC. He is a two-time All-MEAC performer at safety even though he is playing cornerback this season. Last season, he was a first-team All-MEAC selection as a kick returner. "I believe I need to do any and all things to help my team win," said Ferrell. "If making plays puts us in a better position to score points, then that's what I want to do."
Mayhew leads the conference in rushing with 107.5 yards per game. His 78 and 40-yard runs on Saturday were the two longest of his career. Walker is a four-year starter at center. He has started all but one game in his career. He graded out well against the Bears.
The Aggies are in action again on Saturday, Oct. 8 as they take on Bethune-Cookman at Aggie Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Tailgating begins at 8:30 a.m.
