ROCK HILL, S.C. – A big fifth inning by Winthrop led the Eagles to an 8-2 win over the North Carolina A&T baseball team Tuesday night at Winthrop Ballpark.

All eight of the Eagles runs came in the fifth. Before the Winthrop outburst, the Aggies held a 1-0 lead as Brandon Wilkerson put himself in scoring position by stealing second and going to third on a throwing error in the fourth inning.

Cameron Jergens eventually brought him home on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Stephen Wallace gave the Eagles their biggest boost in the fifth with a bases-clearing, three-run RBI double to left field off reliever Kirby Whicker to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

Clay Altman followed with an RBI single. Zac Goodno also singled to put runners at first and second. An RBI double to left increased Winthrop’s lead to 6-1 as Goodno scored. A wild pitch and an error would complete the 8-run fifth for Winthrop (9-11).

Left-hand A&T starter DarAmani Swift (1-2) struck out four before leaving after 4.2 innings. Wallace had a 2-for-3 day to go along with this three RBI. The Aggies (8-11) will travel to High Point Wednesday evening to face High Point University at 6.
