LEXINGTON, Va. -- It was an outstanding Saturday for the North Carolina A&T swimming program in Lexington, Va. The Aggies defeated Howard University and tied Virginia Military Institute.

“It was a very great meet,” said A&T head coach Shawn Hendrix. “Every event was exciting. It was a great meet to attend; it was very competitive all the way to the end. Everyone that swam placed. We didn’t swim very well last week, and I’m very impressed at how we refocused and really swam today. The girls did a great job and mentally we were very strong.”

Senior Christian Hill earned first place in the women’s 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:12. Sophomores Niya Ross and sophomore Aarica Carrington took first and second place in the women’s 200-yard freestyle.  The team’s 200-yard medley relay took second place at the meet. The relay consisted of Hill, senior Aarin Miles, Carrington and senior Courtney Jefferson.

Sophomore Kenya Dunn placed third in the women’s 50-yard freestyle at a time of 26.13. Sophomore Victoria Orr had a second-place finish in the women’s 200-yard IM at 2:28.

Ross and sophomore Dominique Crable took second and third in the women’s 100-yard freestyle. Hill and Ross took second and third in the women’s 500-yard freestyle.

Throughout the meet the Aggies went back and forth in scoring against the other teams. The women’s 100-yard breaststroke was really the turning point for the Aggies against VMI.  Junior Danielle Jackson took first place and Crable took second in this event, helping A&T earn its tie.  Jackson swam her best time of the season at 1:10.61.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Crable, Orr, sophomore Miranda Jacobs and senior Erika Eisenman (anchor) was also instrumental after finishing second. A&T needed those gritty performances because they came into the meet down 18 points to VMI because they did not have a diver.

“The seniors really did well today,” said Hendrix. “It was very competitive all the way to the end. We had to win the breaststroke and both relays in order to tie.”

The Aggies next meet will be their first home meet opener, a Nov. 8contest against VMI in Corbett Sports Center at 5 p.m.
