NORFOLK, Va. - North Carolina A&T State University track and field student-athlete Jared Baldwin was named the inaugural Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Man of the Year, the conference announced today.  The award, selected by the MEAC Athletic Directors, celebrates the achievements of male senior student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership.

Baldwin's acheivment holds a very important distinction for A&T. In 2006, A&T softball player Renecia Lovelace was the inaguaral MEAC Woman of the Year. Now Baldwin is the first ever MEAC Man of the Year.

"Mr. Baldwin's commitment and excellence on and off the field of play exemplifies why he is the inaugural MEAC Man of the Year. His accomplishments are a testament not only to his hard work and dedication but also that of his administrators, athletic and academic support staff and coaches who helped him while at North Carolina A&T," said MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas.

Baldwin won first place in the long jump at the 2012 MEAC Men's Indoor Championship and captured bronze in the triple jump to earn All-MEAC first and third team honors. During the outdoor track and field season the senior qualified for the NCAA Division I East Regional for the first time in his career in the triple jump.

The Greensboro native finished second in the triple jump at the 2011 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with a leap of 47.51 meters and was a top five finisher in the long jump event.

Away from the track, Baldwin was a tutor for the Aggie Impact Scholars Program, Vice President of Triad Aggies (2010) and worked as a summer intern for General Motors and Deloitte.  His community service ventures included working with the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and the Welfare Reform Liaison Project.

He was also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers which works to advance technological innovation and excellence to benefit humanity. Baldwin graduated in May with a 3.43 GPA in Computer Engineering.

His scholastic achievements included the Dean's List, MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team (2009, 2010, 2012), North Carolina A&T Honors Program, and Dowdy Scholar. He was inducted in four national honor societies including Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Baldwin will be recognized for the achievements during the annual MEAC Football Press Luncheon on Friday, July 20 at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia.  University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball student-athlete Karim Gonzalez was the 2012 MEAC Man of the Year runner-up.
