CHARLOTTE – Ahead of the prestigious Penn Relays, the North Carolina A&T track and field teams have received some good news recently.

Keenan Smith, a sophomore sprinter and jumper for the Aggies, was named MEAC Male Field Athlete of the Week last Friday before the Aggies took a few competitors to the University of North Carolina Charlotte for the Charlotte Invitational.

Smith earned the weekly honor after finishing first in the men’s triple jump at the Aggie Invitational with a leap of 50-feet, 11-inches. His jump ranks first in the conference and 21st in the nation. Smith also jumped 22-feet, 5 ¼ inches in the men’s long jump at the Aggie Invite to finish second.

This marks the second time this year someone from Smith’s family has been recognized by the conference in track and field.  His twin brother Kendrick earned MEAC Male Field Athlete of the Week honors during the indoor season on Jan. 14.

In Charlotte, Saeed Jones finished third in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:51.25. His time over the weekend will help is seeding during the upcoming MEAC Track and Field Outdoor Championships scheduled to be held at Irwin Belk Track, May 3-4. Jones’ 9:51.25 ranks him fourth in the conference.

Penn Relays, one of the biggest track events of the year, will run April 25-27. The Aggies will then return to Greensboro in preparation for the MEAC championships.
