STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The North Carolina A&T women’s and men’s track and field teams will compete at the Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa., for one of the biggest meets of the season.
The meet is scheduled to begin Friday, Jan. 31 at 4p.m. The Aggies have a great number of athletes that were accepted to compete at the invitational.
On women’s side, senior Latrese Barker will be competing in the 60 meters. Senior Roshel Bygrave is entered in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Bygrave is ranked among the top-10 in the MEAC in the 200 and 400.
Freshman Daniqua Dye and senior Brittanie Morris are in the 500 meters dash. Morris is also entered in the 60 meter hurdles along with junior Tiffany Ellick who is ranked sixth in the conference in the event. Ellick will also compete in the long and triple jumps.
Sophomore Nakita Gray, who is ranked 21st nationally and second in the conference, will try to top her personal best 5-foot, 10-inch mark this weekend is in the high jump. Junior Sherri Owens and sophomore Demetria Dickens are entered in the shot put and weight throw.
Three Aggie men, Maurice Eaddy, junior Marquis Noble and senior Desmond Lawrence are all competing in the 60 meters. Both Lawrence and Noble are ranked among the top-5 60 meter runners in the MEAC.
Freshman Caleb Gabriel and junior Leonard Robbins are in the 200 meters. Gabriel and Robbins are among the top-10 in the conference in the 200 meters.
Freshman Dorian Claggett and Robbins are entered in the men’s 400 meters. Robbins ran a 48.55 at the Wake Forest Invitational on Jan. 11. Freshman Barry Harris will compete in the 500 meters. For the 60 meter hurdles, freshmen Thomas Jones and Todd Townsend along with junior Jeffery Lewis are entered. Townsend is the top hurdler out of the group with an 8.17 recorded at the JDL College Kick-Off Classic in December.
The 800 meter run will be manned by Dyronne Mabry. Sophomore Perry Cabean and junior Saeed Jones will run in the 1-mile run. Cabean, Jones and freshman Darren White will race in the men’s 5,000 meter run invitational heat.
For the field events, sophomores Scottie Harris and Cliff Obodo will represent the Aggies in the high jump. Junior Omozokpia Olumese will be competing in the pole vault. In the long jump, juniors Marquis Noble and Keenan Smith are entered.
Senior Kendrick Smith and Keenan Smith are competing in the triple jump. Keenan is ranked second in the MEAC in the triple jump with 50-foot, 1 ¼ inch jump recorded at the Wake Forest Invitational. The men’s 4x400 relay team consisting of Claggett, Townsend, freshman Josiah Elliott and Robbins will compete as well.
“I think the team is excited, I’m excited,” said Duane Ross, A&T’s director of track and field programs. “This is our first opportunity to run on a bank track this year, which is the same type of track that the NCAA championships are held on. This is a very competitive meet. This will be our most competitive meet so far this year, so our guys are excited. It’s good to see that they are ready to step in there and do battle with these other teams.”
