GREENSBORO -- The North Carolina A&T track and field teams will be splitting up this weekend. Majority of the team will head to High Point University for the HPU VertKlasse Meeting, while a handful will travel down to the Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the annual Florida Relays.

The men’s 4x100-meter relay (Desmond Lawrence, Darryl Williams, Caleb Gabriel and Marquis Noble) and 4x400 relay (Dorian Claggett, Todd Townsend, Barry Harris and Josiah Elliott) will be the only relays competing in Florida. Townsend and senior Jeffery Lewis will be competing in the men’s 110-meter hurdles while seniors Desmond Lawrence and Darryl Williams will be opening up in the 100-meter dash at the Florida Relays.  Senior Jessica Farr will represent the women’s team in Florida, as she opens up in the 400 meter dash.

“Florida Relays has traditionally been a tremendous competitive meet, so we want to make sure we are taking the athletes to Florida Relays that have that experience and are ready to run,” said Duane Ross, director of track and field programs.

The youngsters are headed to High Point. Ross hopes the HPU meet will help his younger athletes gain some confidence.

“It’s still a quality meet, not on the scale of Florida Relays, but it will give the rest of our team an opportunity to work on some things they still need to work on,” Ross said.

In Florida, the Aggies’ events are scheduled to begin Friday at 1:05p.m., with the men’s 110-meter hurdles. The HPU Vertklasse meet is scheduled to begin  Friday at 3:30pm with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

“We’re excited for all of them. It’s good weather, good competition...this is what track is about, getting down there and competing with the best. Florida has won numerous national championships. I think our team needs to be in that environment more, so they know what it takes and how it feels to win.”
