RALEIGH - It was a rainy last day of the Raleigh Relays, but the Aggies pressed through the weather to complete the meet at N.C. State’s Paul Derr Track.
“We had very solid performances this weekend,” says Duane Ross, director of track and field programs. “Our teams are getting better. We’re still not where we would like to be, but we can see the confidence growing each week within our student-athletes. Our distance runners did well competing against tough competition and rough weather conditions. Our jumpers improved on Friday’s performances and our sprinters continued their streak of improving each time they stop on the track.”
Junior Keenan Smith placed second in the men’s triple jump at 50-feet, 2 ½ inches. This jump moved Smith into first place in the conference. Freshman Todd Townsend finished the 110-meter hurdles in sixth place at 14.25 making him fifth in the MEAC. Townsend also placed 13th in the 400-meter hurdles at a time of 52.95, moving him to fourth in the conference.
“Todd really had a good weekend and I expect him to be a game changer later this season at our championship meet,” said Ross.
Senior Darryl Williams is ranked fifth in the MEAC after opening up in the 200 meters by placing ninth in the invitational section at 21.80. The men’s 4x200 meter relay team of junior Marquis Noble, senior Jeffrey Lewis and freshmen Caleb Gabriel and Joshua Peoples placed fifth with a time of 1:24.92.
On the women’s side, senior Jessica Farr finished eighth at a time of 11.99 in the finals of the women’s 100 meter dash. Junior Tatianna Clark was able to place12th in the women’s triple jump with a jump of 37-feet, 4-inches.
Senior Sherri Owens threw 139-feet, 4 inches, which ranks her No. 1 in the hammer throw in the MEAC.
“I’m very proud of our women throwers who continue to answer the challenge we gave them after MEAC indoors. They’ve set numerous personal bests since the outdoor season began,” said Ross.
The Aggies will head a few miles down I-85 Business South to High Point to compete at High Point University next weekend.
