ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Delaware State right fielder Rochelle Sablay hit a game-winning RBI single to left field to lead the Hornets to a 7-6 win over North Carolina A&T in an elimination game at the 2013 MEAC Softball Tournament Championships at Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Sablay went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in the win. Ashley Bennett chipped in with a hit and four RBI. The Hornets (21-34) will advance to face Norfolk State Friday morning at 10 in an elimination game.
A&T (9-35) was able to overcome an early 4-0 deficit. Trailing 6-4 going into the home fifth, Raven Smith hit a one-hit single to left field. One batter later, freshman Janika May stepped to the plate and took the first pitch she saw from Rachel Meagley and put it over the left field fence to tie the game at 6. But the Hornets immediately responded in the visitor’s sixth. A single by Chloe Oro, an error by A&T third baseman Tranea Jones on a Nicole Gazzolla groundball and a bunt single by Jessica Madrid loaded the bases for the Hornets with no outs.
Sablay then stepped into the batter’s box for her game-winning hit that went perfectly between third and short to give the Hornets the one-run lead. The Aggies had a chance to tie or win the game in the seventh when they put runners on third and first with one out. But Meagley got Jax Woodard and May to pop out to end the game.
Meagley (7-15) was the winning pitcher, while May (1-14) took the loss. The Aggies were led by Sabrina Edmonds’ 2-for-3 performance.
