GREENSBORO – A seventh inning rally lifted the North Carolina A&T softball team to a thrilling 3-2 win over Gardner-Webb in its final game at the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, Ala., on Sunday afternoon.

After a trailing 2-1, the Aggies (2-2) pulled together in the bottom of the seventh inning to make a comeback over Gardner-Webb. Sophomore Janika May got things started with a single to load the bases after senior Sabrina Edmonds was hit by a pitch and senior Jax Kaye Woodard reached on a fielder’s choice. Senior Tranea Jones drove in the tying run with a single but it was senior Haley Snyder’s single that scored the game-winning run.

After Gardner-Webb took a 1-0 lead in the first, Edmonds answered with a solo homerun in the second inning to tie the game. In the seventh, Mahalia Irvin gave GWU the 2-1 lead with a homer.

May got her second win in the tournament and finished with a pair of strikeouts.

In their first game on Sunday, the Aggies faced Alabama A&M where they fell 8-3. A&T held a 2-0 lead after the first inning but the Bulldogs scored four runs on three hits and an error to take the 4-2 edge after the third. Alabama A&M came right back the next inning and used four more hits to push its lead to 8-2.

The Aggies gave it their best shot in the sixth inning after junior Zebresha Blakeney led off with a triple. Edmonds used a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Blakeney for A&T’s final run of the game.

Sophomore Kimberly Brunson was 2-for-3 with a run while Jones and Snyder both tallied a hit and an RBI. Freshman Maiven McKnight (0-1) recorded the loss for the Aggies.

A&T open its home schedule when it hosts the Aggie Invitational beginning on Friday, Feb. 21.
