GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T softball team will meet Gardner-Webb for the second time this season on Thursday, Feb. 27 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in Boiling Springs.
The Aggies (3-4 overall) faced the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-10) two weeks ago at the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. A&T snuck away with a 3-2 win over GWU where it used a seventh inning rally to capture the win. Senior Haley Snyder drove in the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh after senior Tranea Jones tied the game with a RBI single.
A&T is 1-2 since, dropping a pair of games at the Aggie Invitational last weekend to St. Francis and Rider. The Aggies played their best game against UMES where they tallied 12 hits to take down the Hawks 9-1 in six innings.
A&T has been led by freshman standout Dasia Moore who is batting .389. Moore has recorded seven hits, including five doubles, five RBI, and five runs. Sophomore Kimberly Brunson is hitting .385 and has tallied five hits, including the Aggies’ only triple and three RBI. Snyder has been clutch and found herself in several pinch-hitting situations for the Aggies where she has notched a team-leading six RBI in five games and is batting .400.
Sophomore pitcher Janika May (2-1) leads the Aggies with 11 strikeouts and has recorded a 4.81 ERA. May has had help in the circle from freshman Maiven McKnight (1-2) who’s tabbed a 4.20 ERA and 10 strikeouts.
GWU is on a three-game losing streak after dropping games to South Carolina, Boston, and UNCW at the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational last weekend. Senior Samantha Meenaghan is batting .488 with 21 hits and leads the team in stolen bases with four. She is the only player on her team batting over .300 and has recorded at least 10 hits as the Runnin’ Bulldogs are hitting .229 as a team.
Senior pitcher Jessica Childers has held her opponents to a 2.10 ERA and has recorded 27 strikeouts.
Following Thursday’s doubleheader, A&T will return back to the Lady Aggie Softball Complex for a single game against UNCG on Wednesday, March 5 at 3 p.m.
