GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T softball team will visit crosstown rival UNC Greensboro on Thursday, March 27 for a single game starting at 4 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Aggies (8-13 overall) are winless against the Spartans (12-15) in their last eight meetings. UNCG and A&T met earlier in the season at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex where the Spartans grabbed an 8-0 win on March 5. The last time A&T defeated UNCG was on April 16, 2009 when the Aggies seized a 3-2 win at home.
In their last meeting, UNCG held A&T to just two hits in 20 at-bats while the Spartans used a season-high 16 hits to shutout the Aggies.
Since then A&T has posted a 5-5 mark and has been led by freshman right fielder Dasia Moore who leads the team in hits (23), doubles (seven) and is batting a team-high .354. Moore has tallied 12 RBI along with seniors Haley Snyder, Sabrina Edmonds, and Tranea Jones. Leadoff hitter Alejandra Barcenas has scored 14 runs for the Aggies, while hitting .306 that includes 19 hits.
The Spartans’ offense is batting .300 behind Katelyn Bedwell (.407) who leads her team in hits (33), doubles (12), and RBI (20). UNCG’s lineup has several big bats including Dominique Madruga (.326), Tory Wright (.316), Danielle Vega (.315), and Tatiana Alcala (.308).
Sophomore pitcher Janika May (4-6) who didn’t make an appearance against the Spartans in their last meeting, leads the Aggies in strikeouts (31) with a 3.54 ERA. UNCG tossed Lacey Leary (2-2) in the win over A&T as the Spartans’ pitching rotation includes ace Raeanne Hicks (6-8) and Nicole Thomas (4-5). Hicks has recorded 80 strikeouts and has posted a 3.93 ERA.
Following Thursday’s game, the Aggies will open up MEAC play on Saturday, March 29 by hosting a doubleheader against S.C. State beginning at 1 p.m., at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex. A&T will close out the series, Sunday, March 30 at noon.
