GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T’s Kelvin Freeman and Luke Tendler added to their laurels on Thursday as they were named third-team Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball.

“Those guys are deserving of the award and they both pretty much carried the offense this season,” said A&T head coach Joel Sanchez. “Kelvin is a senior, but Luke is returning, so hopefully he can continue his offensive output.  “Good for them and good for us.  That’s good for us as a baseball program to get their two names out on a national level.”

Freeman and Tendler, both Wilmington, N.C., natives, were the only two MEAC players and HBCU players to garner Louisville Slugger All-American honors this season. They were among 38 players named to the third team.  A total of 17 players earned first-team honors, while 25 players earned second-team honors.

Freeman, a senior first baseman, capped off an outstanding senior campaign with MEAC Player of the Year, first-team All-MEAC and MEAC All-Tournament honors this spring.  Freeman led the conference in home runs, RBI and total bases, and currently is ranked seventh in the nation in home runs, 28th in RBI and 12th in slugging percentage at .663. Freeman finished the season with a .342 average, 12 doubles, a triple, 16 home runs and 59 RBI.  He ended his A&T career with 49 doubles, three triples, 31 home runs, 175 RBI and a .344 average. His other accomplishments over the past four years include being named the 2010 MEAC Rookie of the Year, earning second-team 2012 All-MEAC accolades, being selected a 2010 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and securing 2010 MEAC All-Tournament honors.

Tendler, a junior shortstop, recorded a superb junior season in 2013, earning first-team All-MEAC honors for the second time in his career.  He finished the season with a .369 average, 25 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 34 RBI.  He is fourth in the nation and led the MEAC in doubles. Tendler is also among the leaders in the conference in average and hits and was second in the MEAC in home runs and total bases behind Freeman. Tendler holds a career .350 average with 55 doubles, 15 triples, 17 home runs and 142 RBI after three seasons with the Aggies. He earned second-team All-MEAC honors in 2012 and was named to the 2012 MEAC All-Tournament team.  He also garnered first-team All-MEAC honors, and was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team in 2011.
