EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T finally got to play at home for the first time in 2019 after playing their first 11 games of the softball season away from the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

They looked really appreciative. Junior Alyssa Smith, freshman Destanny Parker and sophomore Samantha Ramirez had two hits apiece to lead the Aggies to an 8-3 win over the Saint Peter’s Peacocks Wednesday afternoon.

The Aggies (2-10) ended the day with season-highs in runs and hits (13). Senior Zadaisha Waddell got her first win of the season in the circle by pitching a complete-game that included her striking out six Peacocks. Parker, Waddell and Smith had two RBI apiece.

Saint Peter’s (1-6) took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Alyssa Mido.

But the Aggies had plenty of answers in their fifth inning. The Aggies put together six runs on five hits and were aided by two errors in the inning. The Aggies were able to tie the game at 1 when SPU starter Syndey Ramsey hit Parker with a pitch forcing in a run from third.

Then the Aggies bats started to heat up. Waddell hit an RBI single to left before Smith ripped an RBI double to deep center field to score two more to give the Aggies a 4-1 lead. The Peacocks turned to Barbara Verrastro in the circle to cool down the Aggies. It worked temporarily.

Verrastro got junior Alyssa Green to hit a slow groundball home, which Verrastro promptly threw home to throw out Waddell trying to score. But Green was able to reach on the fielder’s choice and later forced a throw down to second on a steal attempt. Green slid in safely as the ball rolled into center field off a bad throw which allowed Smith to score.

Green closed out the scoring in the inning by scoring on an RBI single by freshman Tivonia Cole to complete the Aggies best inning of the season.

N.C. A&T was not done for the game, however. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Parker had an RBI single to right field to put the Aggies ahead 7-1. A fielder’s choice led to the Aggies final run of the afternoon.

The Aggies will try to keep their home field advantage intact over the weekend as they host their annual Aggie Invitational at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex. This season the Aggies have invited Alabama A&M, Brown and Rider to their invitational. N.C. A&T will open play 12 p.m., Friday when they play Alabama A&M. They will follow that game with a contest against Brown.
