EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina designated player Zadaisha Waddell drove in four runs in two games Friday but the Aggies dropped both games of their annual North Carolina A&T Aggie Softball Invitational. The Aggies dropped a 7-5 decision early in the day before losing to Brown 5-2 in the final game of the day.
In the first game against AAMU, the Bulldogs scored the first five runs but the Aggies (2-13) kept cutting into that lead until Waddell’s two-run home run tied the game at five in the bottom of the sixth inning. But the Bulldogs (9-7) scored the winning runs in the top of the seventh inning.
In the second game against Brown (3-3), the Bears scored two runs in the top of the first inning, followed by a run by the Aggies in the bottom half of the inning. The score stayed the same until the seventh inning when Brown scored three runs in the top of the inning and N.C. A&T scored another run in the bottom half of the inning.
In the game against the Bulldogs, freshman Nikki Varela and senior Taylor Martin led the team with two hits apiece, while Waddell and Varela each added two RBI.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, an error allowed a Bulldog to reach on base to put runners on first and second. A home run to left field gave A&M a 3-0 lead and added two more runs in the top of the third inning after an RBI single and an RBI groundout for a 5-0 lead.
The Aggies got on board in the bottom half of the inning after Varela singled to center field to drive home Martin from second to cut the lead to 5-1 after three innings. North Carolina A&T scored two more runs in the fifth inning after Varela singled to center field to drive home freshman Desttany Parker from third and Martin from second to cut the lead to 5-3 after five.
N.C. A&T tied the game at five after Waddell’s two-run home run to left center field. Alabama A&M scored the winning run in the top of the seventh after a two-out error that allowed two runs to score.
The Aggies went down in order in their seventh.
Against Brown, junior Alyssa Smith, Waddell and freshman Vivica Boyd recorded two hits apiece and Waddell added two RBI.
Brown scored two runs in the top of the first inning after a passed ball and a sacrifice fly, but the Aggies cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning after Waddell singled down the left field line to drive home freshman Maya Figueroa.
The score remained 2-1 until the seventh inning when both teams scored. Brown added three runs in the top of the inning after an RBI double and a two-run homer all with two outs for a 5-1 lead. The Aggies scored a run in the bottom half of the inning after Waddell singled to left field to drive home Smith but left two runners on base in the inning.
The Bears were led by Madi Cranford going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Ashli Lotz went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The Aggies are back in action Saturday with Rider at noon and Sunday against Alabama A&M at noon.
