DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the third straight game the North Carolina A&T softball fell behind early and could not quite make up the deficit as Bethune-Cookman earned a three-game sweep with a 4-3 win over the Aggies Sunday afternoon at Sunnyland Park.

The loss in the Aggies (8-25, 5-7 MEAC) sixth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss. Senior Zadia Davis went 2-for-4 for the Aggies. Senior Zadaisha Waddell, sophomore Marcey Jiles and junior Alyssa Smith drove in a run apiece.

The Wildcats opened the game with a three-run first inning. Kaiya Epps-Lee’s bunt single drove in B-CU’s first run after Brianna Paysinger doubled. Cheyenne Smith, who reached on a single, moved to second on Epps-Lee’s hit to set up a two-run RBI single by Sasha Killings to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

An RBI single in the second by Smith put the Wildcats (20-26, 11-1 MEAC) ahead by four. But the Aggies had a comeback in them.

The third inning saw freshman Nikki Varela earn a one-out single to center field. After a strikeout, Waddell walloped an RBI double to center to score Varela. Jiles followed with another double as Waddell scored to make it a 4-2 contest. After a walk was surrendered to sophomore Hailee Cutts, the Wildcats changed pitchers.

Destiny Enriquez replaced Alexis Bermudez in the circle as she was scheduled to face Alyssa Smith. Smith kept the doubles going by doubling to right center to score Jiles to bring the Aggies to within one at 4-3. But the inning ended when senior Mohagony Headen lined out to short.

The pitchers, Waddell and Enriquez, took over from there. Waddell scattered three hits the rest of the way but still took the loss to fall to 4-6. Enriquez retired the last 13 batters she faced to get the win to improve to 6-6.

Killings led the Wildcats by going 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Aggies are back in action 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 24 when they host Elon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
