GREENSBORO – Sophomore Jayla Scott of the North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team was named to the first-ever HBCU All-American team announced on Friday.
In singles play, Scott picked up four wins last year for the Aggies. Scott started the season off competing in the No. 5 singles spot but worked her way up to the No. 2 spot by the end of the 2013 season.
In her first singles win, Scott swept Octavia Wynn (6-0, 6-0) of Fayetteville State on Feb. 28, 2012. Scott went on to record two more consecutive singles wins over MEAC opponents from Savannah State and Florida A&M. On Mar. 4, 2012 she made her first appearance in the No. 2 spot for the Aggies and notched her fourth win against Bethune- Cookman.
A&T was also 26th in the HBCU National Tennis Rankings. The Aggies received 200 points in the poll as Southern University took the top spot with 1,550 points. The rankings and All-American selections were from the 2012-13 tennis season and all were used on an objective point formula.
The Aggies open the 2014 season on Saturday, Jan. 18 at UNC Wilmington.
