Aggies Come Up Short In Virginia and Maryland

GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team dropped a pair of non-conference matches while visiting Virginia and Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies (2-15 overall) made their first stop in Virginia to face George Mason where they fell 7-0. The Patriots swept the three doubles matches to take the initial point. Ashley Delaney defeated Jayla Scott after Scott had to retire down 2-3 in the second set after Delaney had won the opening set 6-4. 

Morgan Yang, Olivia Lacy-Thompson, Esu Erdenebat, Sofia Santa Maria and Mina Saygi were able to win their singles matches in straight sets against Kenya Colbert, Kimberly Stalling, Saundra Smith, Lexxus Betts, and Kiana Washington to arrive at the final 7-0 score.

A&T made its way to Maryland hours later to face Coppin State. The Aggies played better but the Eagles (2-13) managed to come out with a 5-2 win.

Stalling and Scott took down Carentxa Goode and Katherine Chisholm 8-0 in doubles but CSU’s Zollisca Sunkins and Ashley Milo defeated Colbert and Smith 8-3. Betts and Washington battled hard against Jennifer Mitchell and Miranda Taylor but fell 8-6.

Scott claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Goode in the No. 2 singles position. Stalling also gave the Aggies another point by defeating Sunkins 6-2, 6-1. Smith put up a close battle with Chisholm who won the match 6-4, 1-6, 10-6. Milo, Taylor, and Mitchell secured wins over Colbert, Betts, and Washington.

A&T will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, April 13 when it faces UMES at 10 a.m.
