GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team captured its first win of the season earlier on Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 victory against Averett in Danville, Va.

The Aggies (1-6 overall) swept four matches in singles play and seized two wins in doubles.

“This was the first match we were able to field a full team,” head coach Bruce Myers said. “We have had six weeks of practice under our belts and are starting to come together as a team.”

In double’s action, senior Kimberly Stalling and sophomore Jayla Scott swept Jessie Gomes and Annalies Jobsis, 8-0 in the top position while junior Kenya Colbert paired with freshman Saundra Smith to defeat Melissa Sanchez and Jewel Dale, 8-1. Freshman Lexxus Betts and Kiana Washington played a tough match against Katie Abelseth and Riley Smith in the final doubles match but fell 8-6.

In the No. 1 singles spot, Colbert swept Gomes 6-0, 6-0 as Scott, Stalling, and Smith all went on to blank Dale, Jobsis, and Sanchez in the second, third, and fourth positions. Betts defeated Smith 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot. Abelseth claimed Averett’s only win in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Washington in the final spot.

A&T will compete in the MEAC Round-Up beginning on Friday, March 7 where it will face S.C. State, Savannah State, Bethune-Cookman, and Florida A&M in Florence, S.C.

“We have a tough conference stretch next week and I would like for us to go over .500 for the remainder of the season," said Myers.
