FLORENCE, S.C. – The North Carolina A&T tennis completed the annual MEAC Roundup with a close loss to Savannah State and tough losses to S.C. State, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M.

The Aggies loss to Savannah State was especially tough because the difference in the match was a loss by default at the No. 6 singles slot. The loss eliminates the Aggies from qualifying for the MEAC tournament April 17-19 in Florence, S.C. Interim coach Bruce Myers said the trip was vital.

“It was a mid-season checkup for our team to see exactly where we stand in the conference,” said Myers. “It gives me a pretty good idea where we are and what is necessary in the next 6-12 months to rebuild the program and make us competitive in the conference. We have a lot of work to do with both recruiting and player development.”

Myers will be in charge of not only rebuilding the Aggies women’s tennis program, but he is also recruiting for the men’s program, which will be reinstated in 2014-15. With the men’s program returning, there is plenty of room for optimism.

“The team had a ton of built in excuses before they ever stepped foot on the court in Florence – no fall practice, limited practice and match schedule, no incoming recruiting class, not enough players to field a full lineup – but to their credit they never once complained or failed to give 100 percent.”

A&T had to play four matches in 48 hours with only five players.  Despite the lack of depth, the Aggies took the doubles point from Savannah State with duos of Jayla Scott and Kimberly Stalling and Kenya Colbert and Saundra Smith winning their respective doubles matches.

Stalling and Scott also won their singles matches, but the Aggies did not have enough bodies to field a No. 6 singles player.

“While we have a long way to go to get back to being competitive in the conference, I think we have very strong foundation from which to build this team,” Myers said. “The Savannah State match came down to the last singles match; remarkable considering we give up one singles point and default one of our three doubles points.”

The Aggies next tennis match will be Thursday, March 13, at UNC Asheville at 3pm.
