DURHAM – North Carolina A&T slipped into a position that didn’t seem possible a little more than a week ago. The Aggies are fighting for their postseason lives after losing their sixth straight conference game and their ninth game overall with a 12-3 loss to N.C. Central Sunday afternoon at Durham Athletic Park.

The loss drops the Aggies to 11-21 overall and 6-9 in the MEAC. They are tied in the loss column with Savannah State for the fourth and final MEAC tournament berth in the southern division.

Cameron Jergens led the Aggies with two RBI but the Eagles (14-17-1, 8-5 MEAC) offense put together the timely hitting it needed to sweep A&T for the first time ever. N.C. Central put the game away in its seventh inning as Bryant Battle walked and moved to third on a wild pitch and balk by right-hand reliever Brian Poag.

Poag would walk James Dey to put runners on first and second. Dey then took off for second. When A&T catcher Stefan Jordan threw down to second, Dey sprinted for home. Second baseman Kyle Clary’s throw to home was a second late as Battle slid home safely for an 8-3 NCCU lead. Poag also walked Jake Cagle for his third walk of the inning. The Aggies then turned to RHP Kirby Whicker.

Whicker gave up an RBI single to right field to score Dey. Zach Lee’s RBI sacrifice fly to left gave the Eagles a 10-3 lead. Carlos Ortiz closed out the four-run seventh with an RBI double down the right field line.

Carter Williamson led the Eagles by going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Dey added three RBI and Tyson Simpson Jr., went 2-for-5 with two RB I.
