GREENSBORO – Despite a riveting crowd in Moore Gymnasium, the North Carolina A&T volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-23, 8, 19) setback to Campbell on Tuesday evening.

Fans packed the gymnasium and the energy was felt as the Aggies (1-15) and Camels (9-7) played a very intense set to start the match.

A&T had the first set in its hands and mounted a 16-11 lead over the Camels forcing them to take a timeout. Campbell slowly began to string points along until the game was tied at 21. The Aggies scored the next two points but the Camels put together a 4-0 rally to win the set.

“We came out with a lot of energy in the first set,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “The crowd was amazing and exciting, but we didn’t carry that energy with us into the second set. “

Campbell dominated the second set after taking an 11-1 edge. A&T wasn’t able to rebound as the Camels held the Aggies to just eight points.

The Aggies did find their spark again in the third set. Although Campbell held the lead for most of the set, A&T found itself within reach as it cut the Camels lead to 15-14. However Campbell used a 10-5 run to win the match.

“We found some nice rhythm here and there and it was great to see,” Clifton said. “But then inexperience and mental breakdown showed up. We bounced back in set three but just a little too slow.”

Brooke Stamnes led the Aggies in kills with nine. It was Stamnes’ second consecutive match that she has led A&T in kills. Chelsea Fox tallied 12 assists. Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth, back from injury, added four blocks and Ashley Johnson finished with 15 digs.

The Aggies will open up its MEAC schedule on Friday, Sept. 27 when it visits Durham to take on N.C. Central at 7 p.m.

“The team is excited about opening the conference schedule,” Clifton said. “ We are primed and ready for North Carolina Central.”
