GREENSBORO – Sophomore Aleena McDaniel recorded a match-high 11 kills but it wasn’t enough for the North Carolina A&T volleyball team who faced a 3-0 (25-11, 20, 14) setback to East Carolina, Tuesday evening at Moore Gymnasium.

“We were nursing a lot of injuries this match,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We used a few different lineups to give some people some rest. I’m happy with Aleena’s performance. She has a great instinct to go after the ball. We played her in the middle and on the left side. She’s a really dynamic player for us right now.”

The Aggies (6-23 overall) struggled offensively against the Pirates who improved to 13-16. ECU set the tone of the match early in the first game and took a 17-10 advantage over A&T until Brooke Stamnes handed down a kill to cut their deficit to six. However the Pirates scored the next eight points to win the set.

A&T trailed 19-12 in the second set before scoring five unanswered points to slice ECU’s lead to 19-17. The Aggies tried to remain in reach but the Pirates put together a 6-3 run to take the second set.

A&T was down 11-7 in the third set, but McDaniel registered two consecutive kills to cut the Pirates advantage to 11-9. ECU used several short rallies to score back-to-back points to win the set while the Aggies struggled to put together runs.

Liz Martino finished with 18 assists and eight digs. Ashley Johnson added 15 digs.

Whitney Campbell led the Pirates with nine kills. Bella Borgiotti finished with 18 assists and Shelby Beasley tallied a match-high 20 digs.

The Aggies will visit Savannah State on Friday, Nov. 8 and S.C. State on Sunday, Nov. 10 for their final MEAC Southern Division matches.

“We just have to get out there and get ready for Savannah and S.C. State this weekend,” Clifton said. “We have to get mentally prepared and hopefully things will go well for us on the road."
