Martino Named All-Tournament
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team fell twice on Saturday in the final day of the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Indiana State. The Aggies suffered a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-16) setback to Akron and loss the final match 3-1 (26-24, 25-15, 25-11, 25-10) to Indiana State.
Sophomore setter Liz Martino was named to the all-tournament team following the last match and finished the tournament with 100 assists, averaging 6.67 a set.
Junior middle hitter Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth recorded a team-high 11 kills on a .476 hitting performance against Akron. After the first set, the Aggies exploded in the second and pushed out to a solid 18-10 lead. The Zips put together a 14-6 rally to tie the game at 24 but an Akron kill and an error by the Aggies sealed the set.
The Zips opened the third set on a 5-0 run, forcing A&T to call a timeout but it wasn’t enough as they claimed the set 25-16.
Martino added 25 assists and junior libero Ashley Johnson recorded 17 digs.
Against ISU, A&T trailed 21-16 but scored the next four points to slice the lead to 21-20. Indiana State won the next point but a kill and service ace from junior Brooke Stamnes tied the game at 22. Both teams exchanged points with ISU holding the 24-23 edge but the Aggies secured three consecutive points to win the set.
A&T struggled in the next two sets and wasn’t able to get its offense going. Junior Aleena McDaniel tallied 13 kills ahead of Stamnes who added 10. Martino recorded 25 assists.
The Aggies will travel to Charleston, S.C. on Friday Sept. 5 for the Citadel Invitational.
