GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T head volleyball coach Hal Clifton announced the signing of Samara Brown to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
“She is an outstanding student, athlete, and person," said Clifton about Brown. "She will fit perfectly into our program and the environment that we have been creating over the past two years.”
Brown (6-foot-1, outside hitter, Raleigh, N.C., Leesville Road HS) will add depth for the Aggies at the net. She is a four-year member of the Leesville Road varsity volleyball team under head coach Taine Mergenthaler. Brown ended her senior season in 2013 by earning the team’s MVP award and being named Cap 8 4A honorable mention after recording 231 kills, 59 blocks, 159 digs and 66 aces.
In 2012, she led Leesville to an appearance in the state championship, was named All-Cap 8 first team and received Leesville’s Most Improved Award. Brown is also a member of the Triangle Volleyball Club under the direction of Jim Freeman and Mike Schall.
“Sam brings lots of experiences with her as she has competed locally, regionally and nationally with the Triangle Volleyball Club,” said Clifton. “Being on a big stage does not bother her at all. At 6-1, Sam will bring some height to our program and will create a presence at the net both offensively and defensively. Though she has primarily played as an outside hitter, she has also played on the right side and those experiences will allow her to compete for playing time right away. It will also allow us to have a more flexible offense depending on our opponent. We are eager to see Sam compete for the Blue and Gold next fall and help us to continue to build this program.”
A&T resurfaced back in the conference spotlight when it made its return to the MEAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the southern division a few weeks ago. The Aggies (7-25) posted their best season in 2013 since the 2007 season.
