DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Despite hitting a season-high .257 hitting percentage, the North Carolina A&T  volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (28-26, 30-28, 25-17) setback to Bethune-Cookman Friday evening at Moore Gymnasium.

The Aggies (2-16 overall, 1-1 MEAC) were led by Aleena McDaniel who finished with 15 kills and nine digs. McDaniel finished with a career-high .429 hitting percentage and committed just three errors on 28 attempts. Brooke Stamnes recorded her third double-double of the season after posting 10 kills and a team-high 14 digs.

“It’s not the outcome we hoped for,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “The first two sets were very tight. The third set got away from us a little. Tonight was just Bethune’s night. We made great swings and they would get a random touch. I really thought we played well. We distributed the ball and hit well. We just weren’t able to slow their outsides down.”

A&T trailed the Wildcats 20-17 in the first set, but the Aggies scored three straight points to tie the game at 20. After exchanging points, A&T tied the game again at 26 but BCU (3-16, 2-1) responded with a pair of points to win the set.

Bethune-Cookman kept its intensity going into the second set after taking a 6-2 lead, forcing the Aggies to take a timeout. A&T readjusted and found its rhythm to take a 14-13 lead.  The Wildcats refused to make it easy and regained the advantage 28-27. A kill from Maris Kellar tied the game at 28 but BCU ended the game with a kill and a service ace.

In the third set BCU remained in control and took advantage of a 21-15 edge over the Aggies. A&T found it hard to put rallies together as BCU won the set on a 4-2 run.

Delicia Pierre led all players with 16 kills. Destiny Hudson finished with 14 kills and Rhea Simon added 12.

The Aggies will face Florida A&M on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. in a MEAC contest.
