GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team recorded a season-high .263 attack percentage in a 3-0 (25-20, 20, 18) victory over Savannah State in a MEAC match, Sunday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

The Aggies (4-18 overall) improved to 3-2 in the MEAC. A&T posted a 3-7 conference record in 2012. The last time the Aggies recorded more than three conference wins was in 2007 when they went 5-3 in the MEAC. Savannah State (0-22) fell to 0-5 in the MEAC.

“It was exciting that we got the win today,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We haven’t been in this position in the conference for a few seasons so it really helps.  However, we still have to get back in the gym tomorrow, clear our heads and work on a few things.”

Both teams played a tight first set but after the Aggies took a 14-12 lead, three consecutive errors from SSU pushed A&T’s lead to 17-12. Errors scored the following points for the Aggies and Tigers but A&T held its lead for the remainder of the set.

In the second set, the Tigers trailed A&T 13-10 but put together a 6-3 rally to tie the game at 16. After exchanging points, SSU got within one after a kill from Justice Dilworth cut the Aggies advantage to 21-20. Two Aleena McDaniel service aces, an attack error by the Tigers and a kill by Brooke Stamnes helped the Aggies close out the set on a 4-0 run.

The Aggies exploded in the third set and opened the game with a 10-3 advantage. The Tigers did get within five after an A&T error helped slice the lead to 20-15. But the Aggies scored the next four points, fueled by two Stamnes kills, to regain control of the set and match.

Stamnes finished with eight kills and McDaniel added seven. Stamnes and McDaniel recorded 12 and 10 digs respectively and both finished with a pair of service aces. Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth tallied six kills and hit a match-high .455. As a team, the Aggies committed just nine attacking errors.

Liz Martino finished with 20 assists and Ashley Johnson tossed in 10 digs.

A&T returns back to Moore Gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for its Dig Pink match against Gardner-Webb beginning at 7 p.m.
