Brewer Named to All-Tournament Team, Aggies Lose Twice

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Juniors Edie Brewer and Courteney Pitt combined for 37 kills in two matches Saturday as North Carolina A&T fell to Winthrop 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 15-25) and Davidson 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 17-25).

Pitt, an outside hitter, recorded 19 kills with 17 digs, while Brewer, a setter, added 18 kills, 24 assists and 11 digs in both matches. Freshman setter Addy Warfield led the team with 28 assists and added 15 digs and sophomore libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera led the team with 27 digs in two matches.

Brewer was named to the All-Tournament Team as she averaged 2.78 kills, 4.33 assists and 1.56 digs in three matches during the tournament. 

“I’m pleased with the competitive fight we had,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We played a tough Winthrop team tightly early in all three sets and we played tight against Davidson losing 22-25, 23-25, 17-25.”

In the first match, Brewer led the team with a match-high 10 kills and added eight assists and four digs, while Pitt moved into ninth place in school history by adding eight kills.  Pitt now has 606 career kills to jump Judith Ball, who recorded 601 kills from 2001-03.

Warfield led the team with 13 assists, while Laboy-Rivera led the team with a match-high 17 digs and added four assists. 

In the first set, Winthrop scored five of the first seven points to take a 5-2 lead, but the Aggies scored five of the next nine points to cut the lead to two points, 9-7. The Eagles scored six of the next nine points to increase the lead to five points, 15-10, but N.C. A&T scored seven of the next 12 points to cut the lead to three points, 20-17.  Winthrop scored five of the final seven points to win the set by six and to take a 1-0 match lead.

The Aggies scored eight of the first 15 points in the second stanza to take a one- point lead, 8-7, but Winthrop outscored the Aggies 17-9 during the rest of the set to win the set by nine and to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Eagles scored the first four points of the final frame, but the Aggies battled back scoring seven of the next nine points to take a point lead, 7-6.  Winthrop outscored N.C. A&T 19-8 during the rest of the set to win the set by 10 and to win the match.

The Eagles were led by Nikkia Benitez and Makayla Doyle with eight kills each, Siani Yamaguchi with 14 assists and Benitez with 13 digs. 

In the second match, Pitt led the team with 11 kills and added five digs, while Brewer led the team with 16 assists and added eight kills, seven digs and three blocks and Laboy-Rivera led the team with a match-high 10 digs. 

Warfield nearly recorded a double-double with 15 assists and nine digs, while sophomore right side hitter Macenzie Richards added nine kills and sophomore right side hitter Fatimah Shabazz added seven kills.

Davidson scored 15 of the first 26 points to take a six-point lead, 15-9, in the first set, but the Aggies battled back scoring 11 of the next 19 points to cut the lead to three points, 23-20.  After a Wildcat point to make it 24-20, N.C. A&T scored the next two points to cut the lead to two points, 24-22.  A Davidson point gave the Wildcats the three point set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.

In the second stanza, Davidson scored six of the first nine points to take a three-point lead, 6-3, but the Aggies scored seven of the next 10 points to cut the lead to a point, 10-9.  After two Davidson points for a three-point lead, 12-9, N.C. A&T scored the next four points to take a point lead, 13-12.  The Wildcats scored seven of the next 11 points to take a two-point lead, 19-17, but the Aggies once again battled back scoring the next three points to take a point lead, 20-19.  Davidson scored six of the final nine points to win the set by two points and to take a 2-0 match lead. 

N.C. A&T scored seven of the first 10 points in the final frame, including the first four points, to take a four-point lead, 7-3, but the Wildcats scored the next eight points to take a four-point lead, 11-7.  The Aggies scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to two points, 13-11, but Davidson outscored the Aggies 12-6 during the rest of the set to win the set by eight and the match.

The Wildcats were led by Hattie Rodriguez with 11 kills, Sydney Champaigne with 16 assists and Elise Edman with eight digs.

The Aggies remain in the Carolinas with a trip to Asheville for the UNC Asheville Invitational from Sept. 6-7.  N.C. A&T starts with Dartmouth Friday at 4 p.m. and UNC Asheville Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky Saturday at 4 p.m.
