GREENSBORO – Marshall intentionally walked two batters to get to Aggies catcher Lester Salcedo who was hitless in five previous attempts at the plate. After the first pitch of the 12th inning, he was hitless no more.

Salcedo hit a walk-off single to right field to lead the Aggies to an 8-7 win over Marshall in 12 innings at War Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. It was Salcedo’s first RBI as an Aggie. It was set up by some mistakes from the Herd (3-3).

After Ryan Hill opened the 12th with a single, he was able to go to third on a two-base throwing error by pitcher Roscoe Blackburn.

The Herd intentionally walked Brandon Wilkerson to avoid being beat on a groundball and to put the force out on first and second. Marshall intentionally walked Luke Tendler because of his reputation as an outstanding hitter. With no outs and the bases loaded, Salcedo, who struck out on three previous occasions on Saturday, stepped to the plate. He didn’t waste time. He took the first pitch he saw from Blackburn and won the game for the Aggies (2-2) as Hill scored the winning run.

Tendler led the Aggies by going 2-for-2 with four RBI. Hill went 4-for-6 and scored three times.

The Aggies took control of the game in the middle innings. Already leading 3-1, a Tendler RBI sacrifice fly to right scored Kyle Clary to give the Aggies a three-run lead in the fifth. In the sixth, Cameron Jergens reached on an infield single with one out. James Harris and Brandon moved Jergens from first to third with consecutive groundouts. Jergens would eventually score on a wild pitch to give the Aggies a 5-1 lead going into the visitor’s seventh.

Marshall would not only rally, however, the Herd threatened to steal the game from the Aggies. Cory Garrastazu hit a one-out, two-run RBI double to center field to cut the lead to 5-3 in the eighth. Sergio Leon followed with an RBI double of his own to move the Herd to within one.

A single and error allowed Chase Vogelbach to advance to second in the Marshall ninth, which set up Andrew Dundon’s game-tying RBI single to center.

A&T went quietly in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings where Marshall took a two-run lead in the 10th thanks to RBI doubles from Matt Reed and Spencer Iacoovone.

Aggies pinch-hitter gave the Aggies new life in the home 10th with a single. Tendler followed with a walk and both runners eventually moved into scoring position. The Aggies were able to send the game into an 11th inning thanks to a two-base error that allowed Wilkerson and Tendler to score to tie the game at 7, setting up Salcedo’s heroics.

The two teams are in action again Sunday at 1 p.m. Mitchell McQueen will start for the Aggies while Michael Taylor will go for Marshall.
