DAVIDSON – Davidson designated hitter Ryan Lowe broke open a tie game in the seventh with an RBI single as the Wildcats picked up a 7-4 win over the North Carolina A&T baseball team Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. It was the Aggies third and final game at the Davidson tournament, where they lost to Davidson twice and UMass once.
Senior Luke Tendler led the Aggies with a 2-for-5 day with two RBI. Ryan Hill and Brandon Wilkerson also had two hits. But it was Cameron Jergens who gave the Aggies the lead in the top half of the sixth with his second home run of the season, a solo shot over the right-field wall to give A&T a 4-3 advantage.
Nathan Becker had an answer for the Wildcats with a solo shot to open Davidson’s half of the sixth inning. Andrew Pope followed up in the Davidson seventh by leading off with a double. Pope moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Right-hander Luke McCreesh then made his first appearance of the season as he replaced RHP and A&T starter Mitchell McQueen with one out in the seventh.
Lowe scored Pope with his game-winning RBI single. It was complemented with a walk to Forrest Brandt. Becker then hit a double-play ball to first. Jergens throw forced Brandt out at second, but the throw from shortstop resulted in a throwing error, allowing Lowe to score for a 6-4 Davidson. Ben Arkin added another Wildcat run with a home run in the eighth.
Becker led the Wildcats (7-6) with two hits and two RBI. Pope and David Daniels also had two hits.
The Aggies (6-7) jumped on top of the Wildcats early as Tendler hit a two-run homer in the first for a 2-0 lead. It was his fourth home run of the season. A&T took a 3-1 lead in the third as Brandon Wilkerson doubled to right, allowing Tendler to score before Davidson made its rally.
The Aggies return home on Tuesday as they face Bryant at 6 p.m.
