EAST GREENSBORO – After Friday’s series opener postponed to Saturday, North Carolina A&T split Saturday’s doubleheader against Marist at War Memorial Stadium.

The Aggies lost the first game 8-4 before recovering in Game 2 to win 9-8.

In two games, junior Ryne Stanley led the team by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while junior Jarrett Norman added three hits with three runs scored. Freshman Tony Mack and junior Dustin Baber each added four RBI. 

In Game 1, freshman Donte Wade led the team with three hits, while Baber and right fielder Jason King each added two RBI.  On the mound, Tim Luth (2-1) took the loss after four innings pitched.

Marist got on board with two runs in the top of the first inning after an RBI single and a fielder’s choice that allowed a runner to score. The Aggies (10-8) tied the game at 2 by scoring two runs in the second inning after King singled home two runs scoring Wade and Stanley.

Marist took the lead in the third inning by scoring three runs in the third inning for a 5-2 lead after an RBI single and a two-run single and added another run in the fourth inning for a 6-2 lead after a solo home run and two more runs in the sixth inning for an 8-2 lead after two RBI singles.

The Aggies scored the final two runs of the game in the eighth inning to cut the final deficit to four runs after Baber doubled home two runs. Marist was led by Mike Casaleggio and Reece Armitage going 3-for-5, while Gene Napolitano added two RBI. On the mound, Ryan Cardona (3-0) picked up the win in relief pitching four innings and giving up two runs on five hits.

In the late game, five Aggies recorded two hits each and Mack recorded four RBI, while pitcher Ethan Chavis (1-2) picked up the win in relief pitching 2.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts.  Senior Leon Hunter picked up his third save of the season pitching the final inning. He gave up one run on two hits.

Like in the first game, Marist wasted no time scoring posting two runs in the top of the first inning after a runner stole home and an RBI double. But the Aggies scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. 

Senior Dawnoven Smith got the Aggies on board with an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1, while Mack tied the game at two after an RBI sacrifice fly.  Baber doubled home two runs to take a 4-2 lead and senior A.J. Hunt singled up the middle to give the Aggies a 5-2 advantage.

N.C. A&T added two more runs in the third inning after Mack singled home two more runs for a 7-2 lead.

Marist scored three runs in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 7-5 after an RBI single, an RBI sac fly and an RBI single. The Aggies scored two more runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 9-5 after Norman hit an RBI double and Mack singled home another run.

Marist added two runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 9-7 after two wild pitches scored two runners and added another run in the ninth inning to cut the lead to 9-8 after an RBI groundout to third base. 

The game ended when a wild pitch scooted past the catcher and the runner at third took off for home, but the catcher threw the ball to the pitcher and the pitcher tagged the runner out to give the Aggies the one-run win.
