Facility: Corbett Sports Center
Series: A&T leads 1-0

PROBABLE STARTERS: G Jeremy Underwood (6-0, 185, Sr., 12.0 ppg in the preseason); G Lamont Middleton (6-3, 205, Sr., 16.0 ppg, 4.5 rbg in preseason); F Bruce Beckford (6-7, 215, So., did not play in exhibition vs. Allen); F Maurice Taylor (6-7, 202, Fr., 5.5 ppg, 4.5 rbg in preseason); F Waylan Siverand (6-7, 190, Jr., 5.0 ppg, 5.0 rbg in preseason).

Aggies Overview:  The rings have been handed out and the exhibition games are over. It is now time to get down to business for the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball team, the defending MEAC Champions, as the 2013-14 gets started Friday night. The Aggies open against Division III Greensboro College, which is less than two miles from A&T’s campus. Despite the proximity of the two schools, they are far apart in terms of expectations. The Aggies will be heavily favored, but for a team with 10 newcomers, margin of victory is not as important as execution. After Greensboro College, the youthful Aggies will play seven straight games on the road against the likes of Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Rhode Island. Therefore, the Aggies will have no choice but to grow up fast. During their two preseason games, the Aggies turned to senior guards Lamont Middleton and Richaud Pack for scoring. But head coach Cy Alexander believes the level of success the Aggies can achieve will be predicated in some part to how well senior point guard Jeremy Underwood runs the show.

Greensboro College Overview: Greensboro College also had success last season. The Pride produced an 18-9 record overall with a 9-5 mark in the USA South. The Pride is led by head Bryan Galuski who is entering his ninth season at the helm. Galuski’s Pride is picked to finish fourth in the USA South conference after losing the conference tournament final in 2012-13. Like the Aggies, the Pride features10 newcomers. Senior Damian Dixon will lead the young Pride. He averaged 15.7 points and shot 44 percent from the field last season. He is also the Pride’s leading returning rebounder at 5.8 boards per game.

Potential Star: Richaud Pack pleased the North Carolina A&T coaching staff with his play in the Dominican Republic because they discovered they had an excellent perimeter shooter in Pack. Pack also led the Aggies in scoring over their first two preseason games. Pack’s outside shooting could be vital as the Aggies try to repeat as MEAC champions.

News & Notes:

North Carolina A&T senior guard Lamont Middleton and sophomore forward Bruce Beckford earned second-team preseason All-MEAC honors. Middleton led the Aggies in scoring in 2012-13 and Beckford started 30 games as a freshman.

Austin Witter, last season’s MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, made the Aggies one of the best defensive teams in the conference thanks to his shot-blocking ability. The Aggies may not fall off this season in the shot blocking category. The Aggies blocked 10 shots in two exhibition games this week. Freshmen Steven Burrough and Maurice Taylor led the way with three apiece.

The Aggies have been dominant at Corbett Sports Center in November. The Aggies are 60-23 at Corbett all-time in November. The Aggies will only have one game at home in November this season.

From the Coach
“What we’ve got to do is show our players the good things they did and build on that. We must point out to them the poor things they did and we’ve got to eliminate those. We’ve got to do a lot of film work and teaching. Hopefully, we’ll learn through teaching and not being on the floor. We can’t overwork these young men because we play three games in five days.”
