A&T Wins Ninth Straight, Clinches No. 2 Seed
GREENSBORO – Seniors Tracy King and DeAndra Davis of the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team scored in double figures in scoring in a 52-42 win against S.C. State, Monday evening in its regular season home finale at Corbett Sports Center.
The Aggies (23-4 overall) improved to 13-2 in the MEAC and has won nine straight games. A&T clinched the second seed in the conference tournament that will be hosted in Norfolk, Va. A&T will play on Wednesday, March 12 at 2:30 p.m. and will face the winner of the No.7/No.10 game.
King led A&T with 13 points and was 5-for-11 from the field. Davis added 10 points and tallied three assists. Redshirt-sophomore Aprill McRae grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
“I thought early in the first half we did a good job of stopping the ball,” head coach Tarrell Robinson said. “We did a good job of guarding the ball which is one of the things we wanted to improve on since the last time we played them. I think the contributions of DeAndra Davis and Tracy King in terms of where this program is headed, they were the foundation of it. They’ve done a great job and we’re going to go as far as they take us in terms of their leadership and showing up to play.”
McRae’s layup with 9:30 left in the first half gave A&T a15-10 lead. The Bulldogs (7-18, 5-10) used a jumper from Kourtney Williams and a 3-pointer from Lynasia Frazier to tie the game at 15 at the 8:31 mark.
The Aggies initiated a 10-0 run with an open three from King with 5:33 remaining in the half and was capped off by a free throw from junior Ariel Bursey with 1:05 left. After remaining scoreless for nearly eight minutes SCSU finally hit a basket, a jumper from Cabriel Duren with 54 seconds left as the Aggies took a 25-17 lead at halftime.
King gave the Aggies a double-digit lead with another 3-pointer with under 14 minutes in the game to give them a 34-23 advantage. The Bulldogs got within five after Williams knocked down a three at the 9:53 mark slicing the Aggies lead to 37-32. However the Aggies managed to push their lead to 44-32 with 6:32 remaining with baskets from Debbie Smith, McRae, and Bursey.
S.C. State went on an 8-0 run and trailed A&T 44-40 but the Aggies used layups from King and Davis, along with a pair of free throws from Christina Carter to push their lead to 50-44 with 2:34 in the game. The Bulldogs were unable to respond in the final minutes as the Aggies’ defense held them to just one more basket, a jumper from Williams with 1:30 left.
Williams led the Bulldogs with 13 points followed by Deja Jackson who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Aggies will visit Hampton on Thursday, March 6 for their MEAC regular season finale.
“Hampton has dominated this league for a while,” Robinson said about the Pirates who are 15-0 in the conference. ”We’re excited about getting a chance to play them before the tournament.”
