WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington ended North Carolina A&T’s seven-game winning streak with an 80-54 win over the Aggies at the Charles E. Smith Center. Debbie Smith led the Aggies with a season-best 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting.

The rest of the Aggies were 12-for-45 (.267) and they shot a season-low 32.8 percent as a team.  George Washington is one of the toughest teams the Aggies have faced this season. The Colonials (7-4) already own a win over nationally-ranked California and have two other games against top-ranked foes.

Yet, the Aggies (7-2) had a great opportunity to pull off a significant road win midway through the second half. An Aprill McRae layup with 10:59 remaining in the game pulled the Aggies to within three at 51-48. The Aggies would not score again for more than six minutes, allowing the Colonials to score 14 straight points to take a 65-48 lead with 6:12 to play. The Colonials Danni Jackson had seven points during the run.

When Jackson scored on a layup off of a Joquel Jones pass with 2:47 remaining, the Colonials had increased their lead to 72-52.

Jackson finished with 21 points and seven assists on 8-for-14 shooting.  Megan Nipe led the Colonials with 23 points as she connected on nine of her 19 field goals attempts.

The Aggies led only once in the game and trailed by as many as 13 in the first half. But a late first-half surge would get the Aggies back into the game.  Smith scored five points, including a 3-pointer at the end of the half to help A&T finish the first 20 minutes on an 11-3 run to go into the half down 35-30.

A&T is back in action again on New Year’s Eve when heads a 20 miles down the street to play Elon at 4 p.m.
