GREENSBORO - The North Carolina A&T men's and women's basketball teams will face Bethune-Cookman, Saturday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center at 2 and 4. As the Aggie basketball teams seek victory over the Wildcats, A&T will celebrate women in sports, while raising awareness about breast cancer.

Children 12-and-under will earn free admission (one child per paying adult). Fans wearing pink have an opportunity to win prizes and t-shirts. But the day's true highlight will be women in sports.

Wednesday, February 6 marked National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Aggies will recognize the day on Saturday. A&T will acknowledge the achievements of female athletes and coaches, while encouraging more female participation in sports.

NGSWD began in 1987 as a tribute to Flo Hyman, a former Olympic volleyball player who died during a volleyball match in Japan in 1986. The day recognizes the past and present athletic accomplishments by women as well as promotes equality and women's rights in sports.

Several women in A&T Athletics are former athletes making contributions as professionals in athletics. Jennifer Williams, the Aggies Associate Athletics Director for Development, played women's basketball at the University of North Carolina. Former University of Miami track and field athlete Katreshia Louis-Verrett is A&T's Director of Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator.

A&T softball coach Mamie Jones has been an important pioneer in opportunities for women in athletics at A&T. Jones was one of the first women's basketball players in school history. She scored more than 1,000 points and led the Aggies in assists, helping the fledgling program gain respectability. Jones also helped A&T usher in fastpitch softball in the early 90's. As a second baseman for the Aggies in 1979, Jones led the softball team to the North Carolina Association for Intercollegiate Athletics Division I championship.

"Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a tradition," said Jones, an A&T Sports Hall of Famer. "I have seen a big change in female sports. More doors are beginning to open for female athletes, and we are beginning to get more recognition for our achievements."
