GREENSBORO- Wallace Miles achieved a few historical accomplishments in his career and was rewarded handsomely for it Monday night. Miles (6-1, 193, Atlanta), the first football player in school history to lead the Aggies in receiving all four years, took home four awards at North Carolina A&T's 2012 All-Sports Awards Banquet.
Miles took home the coveted Hall of Fame Award along with being named the Aggie Athletics Department's Senior Male and Male Athlete of the Year. The football team awarded him with Outstanding Receiver Award. Miles came to North Carolina A&T as a kicker, but later decided he wanted to try being a receiver. He was told by a former coach he would never step on the field at A&T as a receiver.
As it turns out, the position change worked out well, as Miles shares the honor of being the Aggies all-time leader in receptions. He also owns the school's single-season record for catches (70) and yards (1,048) and was the first player in school history to go over 1,000 yards receiving in a season.
Women's track and field standout Shakia Forbes, another Aggie who has been the first to do a few things at A&T, was also a big winner Monday night. Forbes is the first female jumper in school history to earn All-American honors. She did it in the long jump during the indoor season. For her efforts, Forbes was named the Senior Female Athlete of the Year and garnered the Aggie Athletic Foundation Award.
She was also a part of a group of 98 student-athletes who earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Six of those student athletes (listed below) had a perfect 4.0 GPA. It's been an exciting year of Aggie Athletics this season, and all of the North Carolina A&T student-athletes, coaches, and Athletic Department staff took time out on Monday to honor and celebrate the academic and athletic success of their student-athletes.
The other top award winners included women's basketball player Tiffanie Adair being named Outstanding Freshman Female Athlete of the Year. Adair earned MEAC Player of the Week honors five times.
D'Vonte Grant, a linebacker on the football team, was named Outstanding Freshman Male Athlete of the Year. Grant was a Jerry Rice Finalist for best freshman in Division I FCS.
Women's Basketball player Amber Calvin earned the top award for females when she took home Female Athlete of the Year. Calvin averaged 13.6 points and 4.0 assists per game.
