A&T Is Fourth Seed In MEAC Tournament

CHESAPEAKE, Va.—The North Carolina A&T bowling team opened up action in the 2013 MEAC Championship Tournament on Friday at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake and posed a 2-3 record and a 4,417 total pinfall to finish the day in fourth place.   

 The eight-team field played in head-to-head matches to determine bracket seeding on Friday.  The teams will compete in best-of-seven bakers matches in a double-elimination tournament to determine the conference champion on Saturday and Sunday.  

The Aggies (48-46, 12-12) started off the MEAC Bowling Championship Tournament with a 903-823 win against Hampton.  A&T continued the day with a 880-858 loss against Morgan State.  No. 3 UMES defeated A&T 1144-847 in the third match.  The Aggies then fell 985-854 against No. 18 Delaware State, but rebounded to cap off the day with a 955-862 against Florida A&M.

 Freshman Emily Strombeck, who was named MEAC Rookie of the Year earlier on Friday, finished the day with the fourth-best average at the tournament.  She averaged 202.2 on the day with a total pinfall of 1,011.  It marked the third time this season that she averaged over 200 in a tournament.  She bowled a 242, the best game she’s bowled all season, to start the tournament in the win against Hampton.  She also bowled a 223 against UMES.  Junior Courtney Crook bowled a 202 and freshman Najah Owens bowled a 209 to lift the Aggies to victory over the Rattlers on Friday as well.  Senior Amber Brown was second on the team with a 177 average on the day. 

The Aggies will take on fifth-seeded Norfolk State to start off action at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday in a best-of-seven Baker series as A&T competes in bracket format as they work for their fifth MEAC Championship title in program history.     

The Aggies are looking to win their fifth MEAC Championship title in program history this weekend at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.
